Christof van der Berg: A Musical Journey from the Free State to International Stages
Christof van der Berg’s musical journey began long before he started performing for audiences around the world. At just 16, he travelled to Hollywood to compete in an international piano competition, taking first place and setting the stage for a career that would span music, theatre and visual art. Since then, he has built a diverse body of work as a pianist, singer and composer, earning recognition for his musical achievements while developing productions that draw on his own experiences and South African roots.
Early Achievements and an International Career
Van der Berg’s early success in Hollywood was followed by further recognition in South Africa, including the Premier’s Award from Free State Premier Winkie Dereko and top honours in national competitions for composition and contemporary music. His career has since taken him to audiences in Europe, Asia and beyond, broadening his experience as a performer and introducing his work to different cultural settings. Alongside his piano performances, he has continued to explore other forms of artistic expression, including painting and sculpture, bringing the same interest in personal experience and storytelling to different creative mediums.
Bringing South African Stories to the Stage
That interest in storytelling is particularly evident in Shades of Africa, one of Van der Berg’s notable productions. Combining theatrical performance with South African musical traditions, the show celebrates the country’s cultural diversity. It has toured internationally and has included performances with symphony orchestras, introducing audiences at home and abroad to South Africa’s rich musical heritage. The production also provides a broader context for the personal stories explored in his later work, particularly Stories en Sterre.
The Story Behind Stories en Sterre
In this production, Van der Berg draws more directly on his own life, returning to memories of growing up on the salt farm of Witkraal in the Free State. The unexpected death of his father in 2019 and the COVID-19 lockdown, which brought him back to the farm, became significant moments in a journey shaped by family, loss and a renewed sense of belonging. These experiences inform a performance that combines original compositions, familiar songs and personal storytelling, with references to the stars, the legend of the Free State’s last wild lion and the idea of buried gold. Together, these elements give the show its narrative, exploring how the places we come from and the experiences we carry influence what we value most.
